MDiv Program Details & Requirements

IBS is applying to the State of California for approval of an M.Div. degree. Students interested are advised to apply for the MBS, and upon approval of the M.Div. program will be able to transfer into that program.

The Master of Divinity Degree Program at the Institute of Buddhist Studies

To meet the needs of those seeking professional certification either as a Buddhist minister or as a Buddhist chaplain, the Institute of Buddhist Studies announces the addition of a Master of Divinity degree program. This is a three year, graduate level program of study designed to prepare students for professional service either to a sangha or in public institutions, such as hospitals and hospices, jails and prisons, military and university.

Admission Requirements:

  • a BA degree from an accredited school, or foreign equivalent
  • three undergraduate courses on Buddhism, Asian thought, world religions
  • application form, including 3 letters of recommendation
  • GRE or TOEFL examination
  • non-refundable application fee

Graduation Requirements:

  • 72 semester units total
    • each track (ministerial or chaplaincy) has its own set of required courses
  • a thesis (6 units)
  • modern foreign language (language approved by advisor)
