While the IBS offers a set of classes each semester, there are instances in which a class may be cancelled due to low enrollment. If there are enough students to warrant, and the instructor is willing, such a class may be converted from a regular class format to a directed studies format, with fewer meetings over the course of a semester.

HRCE 3002 : Buddhist Ethics: Loving Kindness in Buddhism

This class will first look carefully at the surviving record of what the Buddha taught about loving kindness. It will then survey how these teachings changed and developed through Theravada history up through its modern therapeutic usages. The theme of loving-kindness will be used to understand some of the historical, doctrinal, and sociological issues that are important for understanding Theravada Buddhism. The class will be a combination of lecture and discussion. The intended audience is MDiv, MA and MTS students. Grading will be based on a mid-term paper, a final paper, and class participation. Auditors with faculty permission.
