While the IBS offers a set of classes each semester, there are instances in which a class may be cancelled due to low enrollment. If there are enough students to warrant, and the instructor is willing, such a class may be converted from a regular class format to a directed studies format, with fewer meetings over the course of a semester.

HR 4551 : Topics in Shin Buddhist Thought: The Nembutsu as Shin Buddhist Practice

An examination of the issue of practice in Shin Buddhist thought, culture and life. Will examine historical and doctrinal developments of the notion of practice in Pure Land thought, Shinran’s unique perspective on the nembutsu of Other Power, and contemporary approaches to Shin Buddhist practice in Asia and the West.
Lecture and seminar format. The course will feature three six hour intensive sessions that will take place at the Orange County branch campus of IBS on February 21, 22 and 23, 2013. Remaining class sessions will take place at the IBS main campus in Berkeley on Mondays, 6:15 to 9:00 pm. Skype and the GTU Moodle classroom will be employed to make the sessions available to all students.
Evaluation based on student participation in classroom discussions and final research paper.
Intended for MDiv, MBS, and MA students.
Prerequisites: HR 1614 or instructor’s permission.
