M.A., Ph.D., California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco

Rev. Daijaku Judith Kinst, Ph.D., ordained in the Soto Zen tradition in 1988 and is a dharma successor in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. After completing her formal priest training she went on to study Western psychology, obtaining a Masters degree and license in psychotherapy. During this time she also trained as a chaplain at UCSF Medical Center's Clinical Pastoral Education program. She completed her Ph.D. in 2004. Her work focused on an investigation of the Buddhist teachings of dependent co-arising, emptiness and no-self as they relate to the experience of trust and subjectivity in the Soto Zen practitioner. She received dharma transmission (full authorization to teach) from Rev. Sojun Weitsman. She has taught and led retreats in a variety of settings with teachers in the Soto Zen and other Buddhist traditions. She teaches graduate courses in Buddhist Studies, Contemplative Psychology, and Spiritual Direction and has an ongoing commitment to interfaith dialogue. She teaches the dharma in the San Francisco and Santa Cruz area and maintains a pastoral counseling practice in San Francisco.
