The editorial intent of the third series of Pacific World: Journal of the Institute of Buddhist Studies is to provide a venue for the publication of research and reflection on contemporary issues in Buddhism, with a particular but not exclusive emphasis on the Shin tradition. Contemporary issues include both those related to the application of Shin and Buddhist thought in our present world, and those having to do with the origin, development, and current state of Buddhism as an institution, practice, and system of thought. Essays can employ a variety of different methodological orientations, including for example doctrinal, philosophic, sociological, psychological, textual, ritual, and biographical approaches. The journal is intended to reach both the educated lay Buddhist community and the academic community of Buddhist studies scholars.

The Journal of Buddhist Literature

The Journal of Buddhist Literature specializes in the publication of translations of Buddhist texts from any canonic language. The main intent of the journal is to encourage a continued focus on the textual resources of the tradition, the vast majority of which remain unedited, untranslated and unpublished.

The Buddhist Forum

The Buddhist Forum was first published by the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (issues numbered 1 through 5), and by the Institute of Buddhist Studies, Tring, UK (number 6). The series made public research initially presented as part the series of seminars hosted by SOAS between 1987 and 1997, also known as the Buddhist Forum. Over time the issues have run out of print, and become increasingly rare. It is, therefore, with great pleasure that as a result of an agreement between the Institute of Buddhist Studies of Tring, UK, and the Institute of Buddhist Studies, Berkeley, California, USA, that we are here able to present electronic reproductions of this important journal.

Contemporary Issues in Buddhist Studies

With the support of the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, the Institute of Buddhist Studies has initiated a new publication series, “Contemporary Issues in Buddhist Studies.” The first volume in the series was published to commemorate the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the Numata Endowment at the Institute of Buddhist Studies. The volume is entitled “Shin Buddhism: Historical, Textual, and Interpretive Studies.” It brings together seventeen articles that had previously appeared in Pacific World, the journal of the Institute of Buddhist Studies, which was originally established by Rev. Yehan Numata when he was a student at UC Berkeley. The volume is available from the BCA Buddhist Bookstore.
