SUMMARY:IBS Dorm Dedication and Open House
DESCRIPTION:IBS students and alums\, faculty and staff\, trustees and donors are invited to attend a special reception on the occasion of the reopening and dedication of the Rev. Dr. Seigen Haruo Yamaoka Memorial Dormitory. \nClosed for renovations in 2023\, the dorm has been completely remodeled due to the generosity of Larry and Vickey Yamaoka and the impressive work of architects and builders at Nelson Design and Vance Brown Builders. Read more about the project here. \nThe reception will begin at 4:00 p.m. with a short service. This will be followed by special presentations\, a catered reception\, and an opportunity to tour the redesigned building. Please RSVP for the event here. \nParking is limited at the dorm. DESCRIPTION:For those attending the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion\, as well as friends and colleagues in the Boston area\, join us for a book launch and reception for The Oxford Handbook of Lived Buddhism. \nThe Handbook is co-edited by IBS’s Dr. Courtney Bruntz and Dr. Brooke Schedneck (Rhodes College). Meant for students at all levels\, the Handbook of Lived Buddhism provides instructors and students diverse circumstances of Buddhism lived and practiced across cultural contexts\, to deepen the engagement and study of Buddhism as a lived religion. Join us for a celebratory book event where authors from the volume will speak on the case studies they provide in the handbook\, plus ways their work can be utilized in the classroom. SUMMARY:Introduction to Buddhist Chaplaincy
DESCRIPTION:With Jennifer Lemas\, Daijaku Kinst\, Diane Wilde and Others Saturday\nMay 11\, 2019\, 9:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. \nJoin us for a half-day overview of a chaplain’s work of providing spiritual care and support for people in hospitals\, hospices\, prisons\, and a wide variety of other settings. The work is wonderfully challenging and satisfying. In recent years\, Buddhist practitioners have been experiencing chaplaincy as a powerful opportunity to practice engaged Bud- dhism\, and for some\, as a vocation and profession. Information about the Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy Training and the Institute for Buddhist Studies Chaplaincy Degree Program will also be provided. \nDaijaku Kinst is the Hanyu Professor of Buddhist Chaplaincy at the Institute of Buddhist Studies and the direc- tor of the Buddhist Chaplaincy graduate program offered jointly by IBS and the Graduate Theological Union. She is a Soto Zen priest and guiding teacher\, with Rev. Shinshu Roberts\, of the Ocean Gate Zen Center in Capitola CA. She also trained and is licensed as a marriage and family therapist and completed one unit of CPE at UCSF. \nDiane Wilde has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project\, and helps to coordinate and train over 65 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She was lay or- dained as a Buddhist Minister by Gil Fronsdal in 2015. She is a teacher at Sacramento Insight Meditation and California State Prison Sacramento. \nJennifer Lemas has been practicing Vipassana meditation since 1997. She was lay ordained as a Buddhist Minister by Gil Fronsdal. She is a graduate of the Sati Center Buddhist Chaplaincy Program\, Upaya’s Buddhist Chaplaincy and has completed four units of CPE at Sequoia Hospital. Jennifer has served as a chaplain since 2010 at various Bay Area Hospitals.
