SUMMARY:Pacific World at 100: Women in American Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion in San\nDiego on Friday November 22 for a roundtable discussion and reception to celebrate\nthe 100th anniversary of The Pacific World: Journal of the Institute of Buddhist Studies.\nFounded by Yehan Numata in 1925 while he was a graduate student at the University of\nCalifornia\, Berkeley\, the Pacific World was originally a monthly publication fostering\ninter-cultural connection between the United States and Japan. The journal featured\narticles on Japanese Buddhism and culture and was distributed widely across North\nAmerica and Asia. Due to funding issues\, the Pacific World ceased publication after four\nyears. \nWith the generous support of Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai\, founded by Yehan Numata in the\npost-war years\, the Institute of Buddhist Studies revived the Pacific World as an annual\nacademic journal in 1982. Now in its fourth series\, the Pacific World is a peer-reviewed\,\nopen-access journal produced by the Institute and supported by BDK America. \nThe International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies is proud to co-host a roundtable\ndiscussion and reception to celebrate the Pacific World’s long history. \nThe roundtable discussion\, featuring notable scholars across multiple disciplines and\nmethodologies\, will discuss the topic of women in Buddhist America\, inviting dialogue\nbetween feminist ethics\, philosophy\, comparative studies\, anthropology\, and historical\nstudies. Whereas Buddhist American studies has gained attention within Buddhist\nStudies more broadly\, with welcome attention to the racial dimensions of Buddhist\npractice and scholarship\, the topic of American Buddhist women remains a lacuna. This\npanel aims to draw attention to this area by generating questions and sharing insights\nfrom each scholar’s area of expertise with the hope of inspiring future research on the\nrepresentations\, contributions\, and experiences of American women across Buddhist\ntraditions. \nPanelists include Paula Arai (Institute of Buddhist Studies)\, Courtney Bruntz\n(Institute of Buddhist Studies)\, Hsiao-Lan Hu (University of Detroit Mercy)\, and Nalika\nGajaweera (independent scholar)\, with Natalie Quli (Institute of Buddhist Studies)\nserving as moderator. \nA reception will follow the discussion. \nPacific World at 100: Women in American Buddhism \nFriday\, November 22\, 2024\, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM\nOmni Hotel\n675 L St.\nSan Diego\, CA 92101\nGrand C (Fourth Floor) \nThis event is open to the public; registration for the annual meeting of the American\nAcademy of Religion is encouraged but not required. For more information on the\nannual meeting\, please visit the AAR’s website and online program. https://papers.aarweb.org/online-program-book

SUMMARY:2023 Numata Symposium: Buddhist Practice: Perspectives on and From the Oxford Handbook of Buddhist Practice
DESCRIPTION:On October 6\, 2023\, IBS will host a Numata Symposium entitled\, “Buddhist Practice: Perspectives on and From the Oxford Handbook of Buddhist Practice.” This day-long symposium will bring together 18 contributors to explore themes from the 2022 publication\, co-edited by IBS faculty member Paula Arai and Kevin Trainor of the University of Vermont. The handbook explores transformational practices that require practitioners to move\, gesture\, and emote in prescribed ways\, including the ways that scholars’ own embodied practices are integral to their research methodology. Given the fluidity and diversity of Buddhist practices\, a central question that animates this volume is: What makes a given practice Buddhist? The concluding keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Anne Blackburn of Cornell University\, who will contextualize the volume’s place in the current field of Buddhist studies. \nThis free event will run from 10 am-5 pm at the Jodo Shinshu Center at 2140 Durant Ave.\, Berkeley\, CA 94704. Online access will also be available. \nRegister for online webinar here. \nRegister for in-person event here.  \n  \nModerators  \nPaula Arai\, co-editor\, “Introduction: Embodiment and Sense Experience” and “Buddhist Practice  \nin East Asia\,” Institute of Buddhist Studies \nKevin Trainor\, co-editor\, “Introduction: Embodiment and Sense Experience\,” University of  \nVermont emeritus \n  \n10:00 am-12 pm \nRegional Perspectives \nNathan McGovern\, “Buddhist Practice in Southeast Asia\,” University of Wisconsin-Whitewater \nEun-su Cho\, “Buddhist Practice in East Asia\,” University of Seoul\, emeritus \nTodd Lewis\, “Buddhist Practice in Central Asia/Himalayas\,” College of the Holy Cross \nScott Mitchell\, “Buddhist Practice in Europe and North America\,” Institute of Buddhist Studies \n  \nModernities and Emergent Forms of Practice \nJitsujo T. SUMMARY:2021 Graduate Student Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Authority and Normativity in and Between Buddhist Traditions \n9 AM – 12:30 PM PT \nRegistration info here \nThe question “what is Buddhism?” is deceptively uncomplicated. Scratching beneath the surface of this question presents a host of issues surrounding who has the authority to make normative claims about the Buddhadharma\, what it includes and what it excludes.  \nWhat resources do Buddhist authorities\, laypeople\, and academics draw on to define Buddhism for themselves and for others? What are the ethical and philosophical ramifications of drawing such boundaries for a tradition that emphasizes compassion for others and the impermanence of all conditioned phenomena? What are the responsibilities of academics\, taken as trusted authorities on their subject of expertise\, who present the Buddhist traditions for the public in a putatively “objective” fashion? \nThis Graduate Student Symposium on “Authority and Normativity In and Between Buddhist Traditions” brings together students and scholars from a variety of institutions\, disciplines\, and theoretical backgrounds\, to explore these issues in innovative ways.  \nDr. Ann Gleig \nThe keynote Speaker for the Symposium is Dr. Ann Gleig. Dr. Gleig is an associate professor of religion and cultural studies at the University of Central Florida and author of American Dharma: Buddhism Beyond Modernity (Yale University Press\, 2019).  \nHer keynote lecture is entitled “There’s Nothing Buddhist About This”: Reflections on Racial Justice\, Regulation\, and ‘Real’ Buddhism.  \nIn recent years\, racial justice has come to the forefront of American Buddhism as a response to white supremacy both within and outside of Buddhist communities. In her lecture\, Dr. Gleig will  consider attempts by white Buddhists to delegitimize Buddhist racial justice work on the grounds that it represents an intrusion of progressive values into the tradition and is not “real” Buddhism. She identifies the strategies by which white Buddhists attempt to define what Buddhism is and who is and is not Buddhist. Next\, she will consider the role of Buddhist Studies in such regulation. In what ways have Buddhist Studies scholars colluded with the white Buddhist backlash to racial justice and in what ways might we disrupt it? Reflecting on the reception of American Buddhist racial justice work in both practice and academic communities\, Dr. Gleig will suggest\, illuminates many assumptions around authority and normativity in Buddhism and Buddhist Studies. \nPlease see the call for papers here. \n  \nSchedule: \n9:00 – 9:45 – Opening Remarks & Presentations from Kali Cape & Devin Zuckerman \nKali Cape – How Buddhists Redefined Norms for Sexual Ethics: Lessons from Discursive Practices in 14th Century Tibetan Consort Literature \nDevin Zuckerman – ‘No One Does this Anymore’: Shifting Perspectives on Matter\, Materiality\, and Elements in Tibet’s Great Perfection Tradition \n9:45 – 10:00 – Q & A with Presenters \n10:00 – 10:15 – Short break \n10:15 – 11:00 – Presentations from Ray Buckner & JP de Guzman \nJP deGuzman – “A Buddhist Deplores Inequality”: Discourses of Engaged Buddhism in The American Buddhist\, Wheel of Dharma\, and Beyond \nRay Buckner – Black Feminist Buddhism: Forging a Black Feminist Theoretical Orientation to American Buddhist Studies \n11:00 – 11:15 – Q & A Period with Presenters \n11:15 – 11:30 Short Break \n11:30 – 12:15 – Keynote Address by Dr. Ann Gleig \n12:15 – 12:30 – Q & A with Gleig \n  \n  \nRegister for this event here. \nThis event is very generously supported by the BDK/Numata Foundation.

SUMMARY:2018 Graduate Student Symposium: Buddhist Political Engagements
DESCRIPTION:Buddhist Political Engagements\nHow has Buddhist thought\, cosmology\, or ethics been used to engage\, disengage\, critique\, or conform to systems of social and political power? Graduate student presenters will explore the various discursive strategies Buddhists have used historically and contemporarily to reimagine Buddhist worlds in the present moment\, to critique or support political systems\, and develop practices and approaches to the path in line or at odds with social norms. \nMelissa Anne-Marie Curley will deliver the keynote address\, “Impure Land: Ethical Living for Evil People” \nDr. Curley is an assistant professor in the department of Comparative Studies at Ohio State University. Her work focuses on Buddhism\, particularly Pure Land Buddhism\, in relation to modern understandings of selfhood and the state. SUMMARY:An Ancient Doctrine for New Times: IASBS Panel at AAR 2016
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the International Association for Shin Buddhist Studies\, North American District\, IBS announces the following panel held in conjunction with the 2016 American Academy of Religion Annual Meeting. \nPlease contact Dean Mitchell with any questions: scott@shin-ibs.edu \nSaturday\, November 19\, 2016\, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM\nGrand Hyatt\nLone Star D (2nd Level)\n600 E Market St\, San Antonio\, TX \nAn Ancient Doctrine for New Times:\nThe Shinzoku Nitai in Modern Japanese Buddhism \nThe idea of “two truths” (Jp. shinzoku nitai) is considered to have been first expounded by Nagarjuna\, denoting\, at this early stage\, a distinction between absolute and relative truths. However\, in Japanese Buddhism – and more specifically in the context of Jōdo Shinshū – this doctrine came to be interpreted in more social terms\, representing the relationship between worldly and religious spheres. After the 1868 Meiji restoration\, in particular\, the “two truths” became an increasingly important doctrinal aspect in the justification of pro-state endeavors by True Pure Land sects. This association between the shinzoku nitai and wartime doctrine ultimately led it to becoming a very delicate subject in the framework of post- 1945 Japanese academia\, which is not unrelated to the fact that detailed studies of the topic still remain scarce. This panel reconsiders the issue from a broad perspective\, paying attention to historical developments not only in the two main branches of True Pure Land Buddhism\, but also in the context of modern academic philosophy and Buddhist studies. \nIntroductory Talk\nMark BLUM (UC Berkeley) Shinzoku Nitai in Buddhism \nPresenters\nMami IWATA (Ryukoku University)\nThe Shinzoku Nitai Doctrine and Jōdo Shinshū in Meiji Japan \nOrion KLAUTAU (Tohoku University)\nThe Two Truths in Modern Academia: Murakami Senshō and the Shinzoku Nitai \nJeff SCHROEDER (University of Oregon)\nRethinking the Two Truths: The Interwar Views of Sasaki Gesshō and Kaneko Daiei \nGereon KOPF (Luther College)\nShinzoku Nitai and the Development of ‘Buddhist Philosophy:’ The Kyoto School and Beyond \nPresiding\nDaniel G. FRIEDRICH (McMaster University) \nResponding\nMicah AUERBACK (University of Michigan)

SUMMARY:Maritime Transmissions of Buddhism: 2015 Numata Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 2015 Numata Symposium:\nMaritime Transmissions of Buddhism \nMercantile exchange is now understood to be an important dimension of our understanding of the transmission of Buddhist thought and practice throughout the Buddhist cosmopolis. The romanticism of the Silk Road and the findings at Dunhuang have demonstrated this for Central and East Asia. The same is true of South and Southeast Asia as well\, with the difference being maritime trade rather than land routes. This symposium will explore this latter area of study. There will be two presentations and a respondent: Anne Blackburn\, Philip Friedrich\, and Natalie Quli. \nSchedule:\n1:00 pm: Welcoming Remarks \n1:15 pm: Contingent Transmissions: Lanka and Southeast Asian Buddhist Links\, 1200-1500\nAnne Blackburn\, Professor of South Asian and Buddhist Studies\nCornell University \n2:00 pm: Merchant Afterlives: Rethinking Buddhist Polity and Patronage along a Medieval Lankan Frontier\nPhilip Friedrich\, South Asian Studies\nUniversity of Pennsylvania \n2:45 pm: Respondent and discussion\nNatalie Quli\, Research Fellow\, Theravada Studies\nInstitute of Buddhist Studies \n3:15 pm: General discussion

SUMMARY:Buddhism and Counseling: 2015 IBS Winter Symposium
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the 2015 BCA National Council Meeting\, the Institute of Buddhist Studies and the Center for Buddhist Education will co-host a symposium on “Buddhism and Counseling.” This symposium will feature a number of distinguished speakers. \nTo give an overview on “Counseling in the Buddhist tradition\,” we will hear from Dr. Daijaku Kinst\, and Dr. David Pating. Dr. Kinst is head of the Chaplaincy program at the Institute of Buddhist Studies\, which has seen phenomenal growth in student enrollment and interest. Dr. Kinst is also an ordained priest in the Zen tradition. Dr. Pating is a psychiatrist with Kaiser\, but is also an active member and Minister’s assistant at the San Francisco Buddhist Church. Dr. Pating has given lectures to Ministers and Minister’s assistants in the BCA\, and is presently also an IBS degree student. \nFollowing those lectures we will learn about a new counseling program in Salt Lake City\, Utah\, which is SHIN (Sanctuary for Healing and Integration)\, from Dr. Carmela Hirano and members of her staff. Dr. Hirano has integrated Buddhism\, and especially the teachings and principles of Jodo Shinshu into her psychiatric practice and has created SHIN. We will learn how she and her staff utilize Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu in their therapeutic practice. She is also an IBS degree student and Minister’s assistant at Salt Lake. She will be joined by Dr. Robert Weizel and David Black from her SHIN staff. \nFinally\, we will listen to Dr. David Hirohama\, clinical psychologist and counselor at the Orange County Buddhist Church’s Buddhist counseling center called the “Mindfulness Center.” This is the first attempt at creating a counseling center at a local church or temple. \nThe symposium is open to any of the attending delegates and boosters to the National Council\, as well as anyone in the community at large that wishes to attend. \n
