SUMMARY:2018 Graduate Student Symposium: Buddhist Political Engagements
DESCRIPTION:Buddhist Political Engagements\nHow has Buddhist thought\, cosmology\, or ethics been used to engage\, disengage\, critique\, or conform to systems of social and political power? Graduate student presenters will explore the various discursive strategies Buddhists have used historically and contemporarily to reimagine Buddhist worlds in the present moment\, to critique or support political systems\, and develop practices and approaches to the path in line or at odds with social norms. \nMelissa Anne-Marie Curley will deliver the keynote address\, “Impure Land: Ethical Living for Evil People” \nDr. Curley is an assistant professor in the department of Comparative Studies at Ohio State University. Her work focuses on Buddhism\, particularly Pure Land Buddhism\, in relation to modern understandings of selfhood and the state. Her first book\, Pure Land\, Real World: Modern Buddhism\, Japanese Leftists\, and the Utopian Imagination\, examines modernist reinterpretations of images of utopia and exile in the context of the Asia-Pacific War. However\, in Japanese Buddhism – and more specifically in the context of Jōdo Shinshū – this doctrine came to be interpreted in more social terms\, representing the relationship between worldly and religious spheres. After the 1868 Meiji restoration\, in particular\, the “two truths” became an increasingly important doctrinal aspect in the justification of pro-state endeavors by True Pure Land sects. This association between the shinzoku nitai and wartime doctrine ultimately led it to becoming a very delicate subject in the framework of post- 1945 Japanese academia\, which is not unrelated to the fact that detailed studies of the topic still remain scarce. DESCRIPTION:This symposium will offer an examination of the Shin Buddhist tradition in light of recent developments in continental philosophy and continental philosophy in light of Shin Buddhism. Particularly\, it will feature an in-depth examination of key features in the thought of Shinran in reflection with the philosophies of such thinkers as Martin Heidegger and Emmanuel Levinas. \nThe two days will consist of a public symposium\, with presentations for the larger academic and religious community\, and an intensive workshop for close discussion of papers among the participants. SUMMARY:Shinran and the Sutra of Immeasurable Life: Reflections on Reading in the Buddhist Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by the Ryukoku University Translation Center and Institute of Buddhist Studies\, Center for Contemporary Shin Buddhist Studies. \nIn this symposium a number of Buddhist scholars and theologians will address the questions of how Shinran’s treatment of the Sutra of Immeasurable Life might help us to understand what it means to read a Buddhist text (scripture) and what such reading might entail\, require or imply. \nPapers will be presented by Dennis Hirota\, Luis Gomez\, Charles Hallisey\, James Fredericks\, Mark Csikszentmihalyi\, Mitsuya Dake\, Ichigyo Oyama\, David Matsumoto and others.

SUMMARY:Buddhism and Counseling: 2015 IBS Winter Symposium
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the 2015 BCA National Council Meeting\, the Institute of Buddhist Studies and the Center for Buddhist Education will co-host a symposium on “Buddhism and Counseling.” This symposium will feature a number of distinguished speakers. \nTo give an overview on “Counseling in the Buddhist tradition\,” we will hear from Dr. Daijaku Kinst\, and Dr. David Pating. Dr. Kinst is head of the Chaplaincy program at the Institute of Buddhist Studies\, which has seen phenomenal growth in student enrollment and interest. Dr. Kinst is also an ordained priest in the Zen tradition. Dr. Pating is a psychiatrist with Kaiser\, but is also an active member and Minister’s assistant at the San Francisco Buddhist Church. Dr. Pating has given lectures to Ministers and Minister’s assistants in the BCA\, and is presently also an IBS degree student. \nFollowing those lectures we will learn about a new counseling program in Salt Lake City\, Utah\, which is SHIN (Sanctuary for Healing and Integration)\, from Dr. Carmela Hirano and members of her staff. Dr. Hirano has integrated Buddhism\, and especially the teachings and principles of Jodo Shinshu into her psychiatric practice and has created SHIN. We will learn how she and her staff utilize Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu in their therapeutic practice. She is also an IBS degree student and Minister’s assistant at Salt Lake. She will be joined by Dr. Robert Weizel and David Black from her SHIN staff. \nFinally\, we will listen to Dr. David Hirohama\, clinical psychologist and counselor at the Orange County Buddhist Church’s Buddhist counseling center called the “Mindfulness Center.” This is the first attempt at creating a counseling center at a local church or temple. \nThe symposium is open to any of the attending delegates and boosters to the National Council\, as well as anyone in the community at large that wishes to attend. \n
