DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 2019 Numata Lecture\nwith Dr. Courtney Bruntz\nThursday October 17 at 4 p.m. \nRobots in Robes: Buddhism\, AI\, and Skillful Means \nIn 2015\, the Longquan Temple outside Beijing unveiled “Xian’er” — a two-foot-tall robot monk capable of responding to questions\, chanting sutras\, and singing Buddhist songs. A few years later\, the Kodaiji Temple in Kyoto debuted “Mindar” — a six foot tall android Kannon (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) with the ability to provide a sermon on the Heart Sutra. This lecture explores intersections of Buddhism and robotics to reveal the variety of ways in which Buddhists are making use of artificial intelligence in Chinese and Japanese contexts\, plus the justifications Buddhist leaders provide for embracing robotic technology. From political support to survival\, Buddhist communities are utilizing AI as skillful means. But at what cost? At the conclusion\, this lecture seeks to unravel the implications of Buddhists adopting AI. \nDr. Courtney Bruntz\, Assistant Professor of Asian Religions at Doane University. Dr. Bruntz’s work focuses on tourism and economics in mainland China\, including the use of new media technology and robotics by Buddhist monastics. SUMMARY:Introduction to Buddhist Chaplaincy
DESCRIPTION:With Jennifer Lemas\, Daijaku Kinst\, Diane Wilde and Others Saturday\nMay 11\, 2019\, 9:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. \nJoin us for a half-day overview of a chaplain’s work of providing spiritual care and support for people in hospitals\, hospices\, prisons\, and a wide variety of other settings. The work is wonderfully challenging and satisfying. In recent years\, Buddhist practitioners have been experiencing chaplaincy as a powerful opportunity to practice engaged Bud- dhism\, and for some\, as a vocation and profession. Information about the Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy Training and the Institute for Buddhist Studies Chaplaincy Degree Program will also be provided. \nDaijaku Kinst is the Hanyu Professor of Buddhist Chaplaincy at the Institute of Buddhist Studies and the direc- tor of the Buddhist Chaplaincy graduate program offered jointly by IBS and the Graduate Theological Union. She is a Soto Zen priest and guiding teacher\, with Rev. Shinshu Roberts\, of the Ocean Gate Zen Center in Capitola CA. She also trained and is licensed as a marriage and family therapist and completed one unit of CPE at UCSF. \nDiane Wilde has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project\, and helps to coordinate and train over 65 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She was lay or- dained as a Buddhist Minister by Gil Fronsdal in 2015. She is a teacher at Sacramento Insight Meditation and California State Prison Sacramento. \nJennifer Lemas has been practicing Vipassana meditation since 1997. She was lay ordained as a Buddhist Minister by Gil Fronsdal. She is a graduate of the Sati Center Buddhist Chaplaincy Program\, Upaya’s Buddhist Chaplaincy and has completed four units of CPE at Sequoia Hospital. Jennifer has served as a chaplain since 2010 at various Bay Area Hospitals. SUMMARY:2018 Graduate Student Symposium: Buddhist Political Engagements
DESCRIPTION:Buddhist Political Engagements\nHow has Buddhist thought\, cosmology\, or ethics been used to engage\, disengage\, critique\, or conform to systems of social and political power? Graduate student presenters will explore the various discursive strategies Buddhists have used historically and contemporarily to reimagine Buddhist worlds in the present moment\, to critique or support political systems\, and develop practices and approaches to the path in line or at odds with social norms. \nMelissa Anne-Marie Curley will deliver the keynote address\, “Impure Land: Ethical Living for Evil People” \nDr. Curley is an assistant professor in the department of Comparative Studies at Ohio State University. Her work focuses on Buddhism\, particularly Pure Land Buddhism\, in relation to modern understandings of selfhood and the state. Her first book\, Pure Land\, Real World: Modern Buddhism\, Japanese Leftists\, and the Utopian Imagination\, examines modernist reinterpretations of images of utopia and exile in the context of the Asia-Pacific War. She is currently working on a project exploring Buddhist engagements with self-help in East Asia and North America\, from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first. \nThis event is free and open to the public. However\, in Japanese Buddhism – and more specifically in the context of Jōdo Shinshū – this doctrine came to be interpreted in more social terms\, representing the relationship between worldly and religious spheres. After the 1868 Meiji restoration\, in particular\, the “two truths” became an increasingly important doctrinal aspect in the justification of pro-state endeavors by True Pure Land sects. This association between the shinzoku nitai and wartime doctrine ultimately led it to becoming a very delicate subject in the framework of post- 1945 Japanese academia\, which is not unrelated to the fact that detailed studies of the topic still remain scarce.
