However\, in Japanese Buddhism – and more specifically in the context of Jōdo Shinshū – this doctrine came to be interpreted in more social terms\, representing the relationship between worldly and religious spheres. After the 1868 Meiji restoration\, in particular\, the “two truths” became an increasingly important doctrinal aspect in the justification of pro-state endeavors by True Pure Land sects. This association between the shinzoku nitai and wartime doctrine ultimately led it to becoming a very delicate subject in the framework of post- 1945 Japanese academia\, which is not unrelated to the fact that detailed studies of the topic still remain scarce. SUMMARY:Shinran and Continental Philosophy: Shinran\, Heidegger\, and Levinas
DESCRIPTION:This symposium will offer an examination of the Shin Buddhist tradition in light of recent developments in continental philosophy and continental philosophy in light of Shin Buddhism. Particularly\, it will feature an in-depth examination of key features in the thought of Shinran in reflection with the philosophies of such thinkers as Martin Heidegger and Emmanuel Levinas. \nThe two days will consist of a public symposium\, with presentations for the larger academic and religious community\, and an intensive workshop for close discussion of papers among the participants. DESCRIPTION:Supported by the Ryukoku University Research Center for Buddhist Culture in Asia\, this workshop will explore the history of engaged Buddhism in the US in conversation with social engagement in Japan. SUMMARY:Subjectivity in Pure Land Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:The 17th Biennial Conference of the International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies \nStudies of Pure Land Buddhism — which address the thought\, practice\, and iconography of Pure Land throughout the historical development of Buddhism generally — are often rooted in modern discourses of religious studies that take certain foundational concepts for granted: individuality\, subjectivity\, historicity. But how have the referents of these modern concepts been understood in relation to Pure Land Buddhist doctrine and praxis? How has subjectivity\, the answer to the question of who “I” am or who “we” are\, been understood across Buddhist cultures and histories? How does the “who” exist? How is it known? How is it experienced? The 17th Biennial Meeting of the IASBS invites individual paper and (four paper) panel proposals related to questions of subjectivity in Pure Land Buddhism.
