The Hanyu Chair was established in 2011 through a generous gift from Noboru Hanyu in memory of his late wife, Yaeko. Mr. Hanyu envisioned the chair as a means of sharing the Buddha’s compassionate teaching with all people — Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike — through the transformative work of chaplaincy.
Rev. Dr. Daijaku Kinst was the inaugural holder of the chair, serving from 2015 until her retirement and building the foundation of IBS’s nationally recognized chaplaincy program. Dr. Nancy Lin was appointed to the chair in 2023, continuing and expanding that legacy.
Under Dr. Lin’s mentorship, IBS students develop both the academic and embodied skills of spiritual care. Chaplaincy training enriches ministerial education as a whole — teaching students to listen deeply, meet people in their suffering, and bring the wisdom of the Dharma to all who need it.
To support the work of Dr. Lin and all our faculty, consider making a gift to professorial endowments through the BCA Endowment Foundation. Donate online here and click “IBS chairs” from the drop-down menu.
Thank you and gassho!
