Specializations of Distinction

The Institute of Buddhist Studies offers a systematic and comprehensive educational program in the entirety of the Buddhist tradition. Students enrolled in our degree programs may wish to specialize in one or more fields. Specializations may be an informal focus of a degree program or may be formalized through the completion of a certificate program.

Ministry

The IBS has been committed to ministerial training and education since its founding. Students pursuing a career in Jōdo Shinshū ministry may complete their studies in any of our degree programs, but are generally encouraged to complete the Master of Divinity program. Students may also wish to enroll in the Certificate in Shin Buddhist Studies.

Please contact Rev. Harry Bridge with additional questions.

Chaplaincy

Students wishing to pursue education and training as a Buddhist chaplain may enroll in any of our degree programs as well as the Chaplaincy Certificate. However, chaplaincy students seeking board certification and/or employment in healthcare are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Master of Divinity program as this program has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Association for Professional Chaplains.

Please review the information on the website and contact Dr. Nancy Lin or Dr. Lilu Chen with additional questions.
