Yamashita Scholarship

Rev. Seishin Kiyoshi and Mrs. Marrie H. Yamashita, members of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple, established a $100,000.00 Institute of Buddhist Studies Scholarship Endowment on December 29, 2010.

The purpose for the scholarship is to support BCA ministerial candidates studying at IBS, IBS graduates who wish to study for an advanced degree at Ryukoku University, and prospective ministers from Japan who wish to study at IBS and serve in the Buddhist Church of America.

Aratani Presentation

Mr. George T. Arataini, a long time supporter of the Institute of Buddhist Studies was conferred an Honorary Doctorate at his home in Hollywood, CA on Thursday, June 17, 2010 by Rev. Dr. David Matsumoto, the IBS George and Sakaye Aratani Professor. Dr. Aratani was not able to attend the IBS Commencement Ceremony held on May 14, 2010 in Berkeley, CA.

New Core Faculty: Daijaku Judith Kinst

The Rev. Dr. Daijaku Judith Kinst, Professor of Buddhism and Psychology, has recently been appointed as a core faculty member of the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS). The announcement was recently made by Dr. Richard Payne, Dean.

New GTU Certificate in Asian Faith Traditions and Cultures

The 2010 Surjit Singh Lecture in Comparative Religious Thought and Culture was presented at the Pacific School of Religion on April 13, 2010. At the event, the Graduate Theological Union’s Asia Project announced a new certificate program open to GTU MA, MDiv, and PhD students: the Certificate in Asian and Oceanic Cultures and Faith Traditions (AOCFT).

Report: Buddhism without Borders conference

This March, the Institute of Buddhist Studies hosted an international confernece titled “Buddhism without Borders: contemporary developments in Buddhism outside Asia.” The conference brought together more than two-dozen scholars to present new and innovative research, and nearly seventy participants from four continents were in attendance.
